A Club visit to Aachen (twinned with Halifax) will take place April 24/26 2015. The local cycling club RC Zugvogal Aachen have offered to host this first twinning visit with Calderdale CTC. Aachen is in Germany and on the border with Belgium and the Netherlands – a very attractive area for cycling. The date has been chosen to coincide with the famous Liege-Bastogne-Liege Spring Classic race, which features top international cyclists. The Aachen club have offered to lead a ride towards Maastricht on the Saturday and, then, on the Sunday, ride with us out to the Belgium Ardennes to watch the race. Each day ride will be around 100km.
The visit will be limited to the first 12 participants who sign up in order to keep numbers manageable. Participants will be responsible for their own travel arrangements to and from Aachen. There are three basic options: Ferry (Hull-Zeebrugge)/train, Ferry/car or Eurostar to Brussels/train to Aachen. I can advise on times/costs for each of these. I also have details of hotel/hostel options in Aachen for the Friday and Saturday nights with prices ranging from 20 euro to 80 euro per night.
For those with a few extra days to spare I am offering to lead a small group on a short tour of the Ardennes, probably returning on the Thursday. A small group of us did a similar tour in 2013 which explored the area covering around 80km/day. The terrain is undulating with very attractive farmland, forests and villages – with good Belgian beer and food ! Accommodation will be mainly in youth hostels, costing around 20 euro/night. You will need your own travel insurance and neither CTC nor myself will be responsible for any injuries or losses.
