For longer than most of us can remember, Chris Crossland and his dedicated team of volunteers have been putting on Audax events for West Yorkshire CTC and Calderdale CTC, two of the most popular being the spring (aptly titled Spring into the Dales) and autumn (Season of Mists) rides. This years events were no exception in terms of participants, over 170 riders presenting themselves at Mytholmroyd for the enjoyment of either the longer (Season of Mists) 105 km Audax or the shorter 50km Mellow Fruitfulness version.
The two events were held in perfect autumn weather. The two rides share a common start (to the Burnley end of the Long Causeway) and a common finish (from the control at the Coldwell Activity Centre on the outskirts of Nelson) back over Widdop. As with anything to do with CTC, there were opportunities for refreshment. Season of Mists riders were catered for at the popular Country Kitchen in Waddington before they set off on the climb over Waddington Fell; Mellow Fruitfulness riders had the opportunity to queue at JJ’s diner, or find a place of their own like the tea room in Worsthorne or the HAPPA centre just before Coldwell. Plus the legendary CTC catering at the finish of the ride, of course, thanks to Jennifer Crossland and her team.
Local rider Ian Rodley made a delightful short video of his experience on the Mellow Fruitfulness ride, and has kindly allowed us to put it on the website.
