The much missed John Radford used to organise an annual figure of eight ride from Fairburn Village Hall – Fairburn is just off the A1 three miles north of Ferrybridge. John’s route was always out to Goole in the morning and on to Cawood in the afternoon after lunch at Fairburn Village Hall, a total of around 100 miles. The ride was popular with CTC Members from both Huddersfield and Calderdale.
As a means of remembering John, the ride has continued since his death (in 2016 it formed part of the CTC Tri-Vets series) and was repeated again in 2017. This time the route was a bit shorter – we did not go as far as Goole but turned at Selby, but in most respects we followed John’s original route around the quiet lanes of East Yorkshire. We had some wonderful weather and the ride was supported, as previously, by CTC Members from both Huddersfield and Calderdale. The ride was expertly and discreetly led by Carl Lister of Huddersfield CTC, who maintained a metronomic 12 mph “talking pace” throughout.
Huddersfield Member Ian Rodley made a video of the 2017 ride (thanks Ian !), and an edited version of his recording is below. Ian’s recording faithfully captures the atmosphere of a wonderful ride that will live long in the memory – for the right reasons – of those lucky enough to participate. John Radford himself would have been delighted to have been there, although he would have wanted to know why we had changed his route !!
